She went peacefully, with family at her side on August 18, 2010 at the age of 78. She was born April 22, 1932 to Louis and Grace Cowie. She grew up in Oak Point, Manitoba and left home at a young age to work in Winnipeg where she met Ron. They were married October 28, 1950 and in their 60 years together they raised 7 children: Delores a.k.a. Peeny (David) Johnson, Tim (Les), Tom, Darlene a.k.a. Chick (Adam) Siu, Denise Lawrence, Terry a.k.a. Buck and Darcy aka Dot, (Rob) Beetstra. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, brothers: Leonard (Edith), Cecil (Pauline), Lloyd (Diane); sisters, Eileen (Rene), Marion, Rita (Harvey); sister’s-in-law Shirley (Jack), Snook and her special aunt Margaret. Also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her mom and dad and her soul sister and best friend Doris a.k.a. Dodie.  <br>Vera  loved gardening, bingo, puzzles and camping with her family who she protected with the ferocity of a mamma bear.  <br>Following her wishes there will be no service. Just a small family gathering to celebrate her life. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Thank you so much for the amazing care given to Vera and her entire family, by everyone associated with the palliative care unit. You made our lives so much easier. She married John Tesini on July 6, 1940.  Edna and John, who lived in their home on Haliburton Street for 70 years, celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary in July.  In her seventies and, as always, courageous, Edna travelled by air to England - first time abroad and first time on a plane.  Her motto in trying times -- \"Just get on with it.\" <br> <br>Predeceased by her brothers: Harry Pollitt and Jimmy Pollitt; her beloved spaniel, Sandy; and many dear friends. <br> <br>Missing her are her husband, John; nephews, Earl Pollitt, Bob Pollitt (Dagny & Scott), and Lou Maggiora (Hanna); nieces, Adele Anderson (Phil), Barbara Jones (Gaby), and Marie Wilkinson. Also survived by his stepchildren Kathryne, Kathy, Jamie and their families. Residing in eastern Canada, Ray leaves behind sisters Doris, Karen & Lynne; twin brothers Edward & Earl; half sister Elizabeth and their families. <br>Born in Chatham Ont., Ray joined the Navy in 1957, transferred to Esquimalt in 1959 and decided to never leave his beloved west coast. He moved to Nanaimo in 1969 to raise his family. After leaving the Navy, Ray’s varied career started in the pulp mills of Port Alberni, moving on to S.Madill’s, BC Ferries and starting his own business, M.Burley Driver’s Training, in 1978. Ray finished his career with Nanaimo Commissionaires retiring in 2005. <br>A member of the Nanaimo chapter of Kiwanis for the last 10 years, Ray was lieutenant governor from 2005-2007. His greatest accomplishment was overseeing the completion of the Kiwanis complex on Nelson Street.  <br>The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff on the 6th floor of NRGH for their wonderful care in Ray’s final months. <br>A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Saturday, August 21st at 1:00pm, with reception to follow. He survived by his wife of 56 years Patricia Irene, sister; Margaret Bhallan from Nottingham England, children; Philip (Judi), Michelle Irene, Paul, grandchildren; Frank, Natasha Marilyn (Mike), Amy Helen, Melanie Irene, and great-granddaughter; Chloe Michelle. As a young man, he enlisted in th Royal Navy and served as a Leading Electrical Mechanic from 1954-1957. After his service he worked at Rolls-Royce to support his growing family. In 1968, Roger immigrated to Richmond, B.C. from Darbyshire, England with his wife and three children. Once settled, he worked for Alcan for 24 years. Roger enjoyed 17 years of retirement in Bowser where he enjoyed long walks on the beach, his wife\'s roast beef dinner, and volunteering at the legion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Fred was one of five children born to Joseph and Alice Grounds on July 8, 1918 in Nanaimo.  <br>After leaving the army Fred married the love of his life Doreen Robinson in 1949, and had four sons; Gordon, Allen, Ken and Leigh. A coal miner in the beginning, Fred moved on to Harmac where he retired at age 65. Leaving Nanaimo for Gabriola in the early 1980’s, Fred enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures - taking his grandkids to the beach, long walks with his wife, his garden and lots of golf. <br>An avid sports player, Fred won the 1938 B.C. Lacrosse championships with his team Orange Crush. Fred loved camping with his family, he enjoyed watching soccer, was a devoted golfer, a passionate gardener and a zealous world traveller. Fred was a selfless,  strong, wise man, an amazing loving husband, an exceptional father/grandfather/great-grandfather and role model.  He had a contagiously happy spirit, and warm helping hand and a soft gentle heart. <br>Fred was predeceased by his son Leigh nine years ago and leaves behind an everlasting legacy; his loving wife of 60 years, his three remaining sons; Gordon, Allen and Ken, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two special girls; Andrea and Dakota. Jan grew up in Nanaimo, BC, graduating from Nanaimo Senior Secondary School in 1966. Later, in 1990, Jan went to Capilano College, taking the two year paralegal program, graduating With Honours, achieving Dean\'s List in each of the 4 semesters, while also being honoured as the Class Valedictorian. Jan is survived by her mother, Muriel, her brother, Kevin and his wife June, her children, Ja Lynn (and her husband Tim), Angela and Bruce, her grandchildren, Payton Muriel and Kianna Marie, her niece Alana and her Aunt Dolly. Particular thanks goes to Dr. John Corey, of Caulfield Village Medical Clinic, and the staff at Lions Gate General Hospital for their compassionate care during Jan\'s recent illnesses. Also, to Randall Godden and Mae\'s Graces (a group of     Nanaimo \"girls\" who have been her friends for over fifty years ) for their unwavering friendship and support for Jan during difficult stretches in Jan\'s life. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life, which will be held Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at 2pm at First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC. A reception will follow immediately. A  further service will be held Friday, August 20th, 2010 at 2pm at Brechin United Church in the Fellowship Hall at 1998 Estevan Road, Nanaimo BC.
