His mother Jessie was a Citizen of the UK and his father Neil was a Captain, a Canadian soldier on loan to the British Paratroopers. Mike and his mother were still in the British hospital when it was bombed during a German raid. His mother was a war bride, and Mike and his older brother, John, spent a great deal of time in air raid shelters in the very early years in England during the bombing of England.

In 1946 at the wars end, Mike with his mother and brother John traveled via the SS Mauritania to Halifax, then by train to Edmonton ending at Vermillion, AB where his father’s family lived. A few years later the family moved to Langley. Mike attended school there and got his first job setting pins at the bowling alley and cutting and drying cascara bark for Buckerfields. He was an avid Little League baseball player and was voted the most likely player to succeed in that sport. He was class president at school.

The family moved to Quesnel in 1959 to a tiny log cabin at Bouchie Lake. Four more children were born, Pam, Paula, Patty and Mark. Mike and John spent a great deal of time together fishing, hunting, carousing, and working.

After schooling, Mike worked in local sawmills learning various trades such as sawyer, welding, fabricating, running the edger or whatever needed doing. Later he added more trades, all his welding tickets, Ironworking and Small Engine Mechanics. He had a strong work ethic, and didn’t like shortcuts or shoddy workmanship.

Mike had 4 children in 2 relationships, Freda, Nathane, Theo and Jolene. He worked in Fort McMurray as a contract Welder/Ironworker during some of those years.

Mike’s father passed away in 1988 and his daughter Freda was killed by a drunk driver 12 hours later coming home to Grandpa’s funeral. Mike really never recovered from that tragedy. Life dealt him a number of tragedies. In spite of that he still took on many challenging projects. Once meticulously rebuilding a rare 1947 Indian motorcycle. Although he sold it, it’s still recognized by enthusiasts as a special bike. Also building his log home out of logs so big that people said couldn’t be done. And many other large mechanical projects.

Mike’s education was interrupted many times but always continued. He upgraded to Grade 10, then to Grade 12, then began his many trades, and finally as a mature student he studied academics at Douglas College, earned 65 credits there and registered at Simon Fraser. He majored in Psychology and Criminology. He worked for the Ministry of Attorney General during his college years as a Child Protection Officer and later was President of Crimes Against Children in Quesnel for 8 years.

Upon returning to Quesnel from Douglas College for summer employment he met Ginnie and they spent 21 years together, being married in 2003. He spent over 15 years as a weekend Contractor at West Fraser Mills and eventually added a crane service to his business.

Mike’s passion was his music. He started writing songs in the late ‘90’s and completed his first professional CD in 2000 with all original music. He completed his 2nd CD a few years later. He had enough songs for a 3rd CD which he never got finished. Mike loved to travel to Austin, TX to play music with his friend Bill Starrett, who plays the guitar on Mike’s CD’s. He loved to be amongst the pro musicians in Austin. They called him the “real thing” because he wrote his own music. Although he loved that, he was too shy to sing on stage there because he felt his singing wasn’t good enough. He seemed to be the only one who thought so.

Mike had no plans to retire, he loved his work. He knew he was beginning to fail physically but was unable to find out why.

Mike passed away at home surrounded by family and close friends. He is survived by his wife, Ginnie, his children, Nathane (Selina) Webb of Enderby, Theo (Leona) Webb of Quesnel and Jolene (Tim) Hallam of Edmonton, his brothers and sisters; John Webb, Pam (Roy) Teed, Paula (David) Barrett, Patty (Danny) Karey and Mark (Gail) Webb, his grandchildren, Isaac, Jessie, Telsa, Cody, Calley, Brandon, Michael, Chantel, Justine and Cara and many nieces and nephews.

Bennison, Kelaine (Kelly) Wednesday, 30 Dec 2009

 Quesnel Cariboo Observer Quesnel, BC

It is with deep sadness, that the family of Kelly Bennison, announce her passing at the Moog and Friends Hospice in Penticton, BC, at 51 years, surrounded by her loving family and friends, after a long and courageous 16 year battle with breast cancer.
Kelly is survived by her daughters Rhiannon (Shawn), Melissa (Mike), and Kaitlin (Shane); mother Marilyn Bennison; siblings Mitchell (Kim) and Lynn (Glen); stepson Ryan (Marianne) and granddaughters Zoe, Maria and Amelia.
