Born Aug. 2, 1930 in Cabri, Saskatchewan to Ella & Gustav Swanson, Doris was the only daughter and loved sister to 6 brothers. Being the only girl in the family Doris learned how to run a home in Cabri, then worked in the hospital laundry until she married the handsome soldier, Lars Clifford Lloyd in 1948. Mom made up for not having sisters by being a loved sister-in-law to dad\'s sisters. It takes a special lady to be accepted as a sister by the sisters-in-law.
In the early years of marriage Mom & Dad lived in Keremeos until moving north to Vanderhoof, BC and then relocating to Prince George just after their first child Patrick was born in 1950.
During their years in Prince George Mom was a hardworking and resourceful stay-at-home mother to 6 children. Patrick Lloyd (deceased) Myrna (Richard) Baker, Rosemary (Fred) Lindsay, Donna (Vince) Watts, Joan (Daryl) Gurr, Doris (Hugh) Dixon, 17 grandchildren and six great grand children. Mom showed love and acceptance to all, and was the epitome of a gentle, peaceloving, joyful & forgiving spirit. Her commitment to her Lord Jesus Christ began early in her married life and she was an example to all her children. After Dad retired from trucking they made a few moves including Kamloops, Keremeos, Westbank and finally settled in Summerland where their youngest daughter Doris was raised.
During the years in Summerland Mom & Dad were kept busy raising Doris. Matter of fact, at the age of 50 mom decided she would try skiing. So while Doris was having her lesson, mom was learning on the bunny hill. Through the years in Summerland Mom was also active in her church, babysat for the bowling league and learned quilting. Every summer Mom had a garden and canned all sorts of fruit and jams. Since she was a topnotch cook and baker mom always showed hospitality to anyone and there was always a pot of coffee on the go.
Maybe it was from being raised on a farm, but mom loved whipped cream (on waffles please) and ice cream cones in the summer. In the last few years many special memories were made at Tim Horton’s having old fashioned doughnuts (glazed please) or getting a cone at Dairy Queen and enjoying it down by the lake. Funeral Service will be held Saturday February 6, 2010 at Hanson’s Arbor Funeral Chapel, 527 Ellis Street, Penticton, BC. Service will begin at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Rick Gay. Interment will take place after the Service at 12:00 p.m. at Penticton Lakeview Cemetery, followed by a Luncheon Reception at 1:00 p.m. at 527 Ellis Street. In lieu of flowers family requests donations be made the Alzheimers association in the name of Doris Lloyd.

ZAHAR, Mike Thursday, 14 Jan 2010

 Summerland Review Summerland,BC

ZAHAR, MIKE. She had 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Monica and Bob raised their family in Summerland, later Monica moved to Victoria to work for the Government and be close to her two brothers. She spent many happy years there and made numerous friends. She retired in Sorrento to be closer to her daughters, where she enjoyed the area and the people very much. Recently she moved to the lovely Eagle View Manor in Sicamous where the staff and fellow tenants were most kind and caring. She was instrumental in having our Dad, her ex, as she would fondly refer to him, move to the lodge that was close by, and they spent a good number of hours reminiscing. Her heart grew tired, and being a strong and vibrant woman her whole life, when her memory started to fail her, she just wanted to go and so she did. That is just the way she did things. She was 85 on Dec 15. No service as she wished, but a celebration of her life, at Shuswap Lake later this summer. Donations can be made, in her name, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He suffered a stroke December 28 and never recovered. His son, Bob and daughter-in-law, Beth were with him at the time. Born in southern Saskatchewan, on a homestead west of Tribune, March 27 1919, the fourth child of homesteading parents George and Esther Larson. As a teenager he moved with the family to east central Saskatchewan in 1934, to the small community of Rokeby. Always an athlete, he was competitive and excelled at hockey and baseball. Being a crack shot, he remained an avid hunter of waterfowl and big game well into his 80’s. Vern enlisted in the army in 1940 and completed his basic training with the 1622nd Saskatchewan Horse Light Infantry, at Dundurn, SK. In 1945 he married Joy Sharpe and they moved to the west coast where he was employed by Canada Post, Vancouver. Joy and Vern had two boys, Bob (Beth) of Kamloops, BC and Bill (Terry) of Surrey, BC. In April 1967 Joy suffered a stroke from which she never recovered. Vernon worked for McMillan/Bloedel in the sawmills along the Fraser River from 1948 to 1975, a period of 27 years. He never lost his love for the land and all things agricultural. For many years he was a 4H Club Leader in the Langley and Surrey areas. Seeking a lifestyle change, Vernon bought an acreage at Malakwa, BC in 1972 where he and Rietta took up residence in 1975. Rietta had bountiful gardens and beautiful flowers. Vern had his livestock, registered Hereford cattle, many pigs and numerous chickens. It was a strenuous existence as they raised most of their own food, but it was soul satisfying and they were happy doing it. In early 1980, while working with the cattle, Vernon suffered a severe back injury which required surgery. This necessitated another lifestyle change and downsizing. They bought a small acreage in Summerland. Vern was happy to be away from the deep snow of winter and the tormenting mosquitoes of summer associated with the Malakwa area. Predeceased by two brothers, Gerald and Richard and four sisters. Beatrice, Marion, Irene and Phyllis, he is survived by his wife Rietta of Summerland, her three daughters, Kathleen (Hugh) of Vernon, BC Paddy (Dave) of Surrey, BC and Kelley (John) of Surrey, BC. His two sons Bob and Bill, three sisters, Violet of Tappen, BC, Joyce of Kamloops, BC and Florence of Pritchard, BC. Also three brothers, Bruce of Prince George, BC, Glen of Vernon, BC and Cort of Summerland, BC. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. We have lost a husband, brother, father, step-father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Most of all we have lost a loyal friend. Special thanks to Dr. G. Fullard, BC Ambulance, Kim and the staff at PRH. At his request there will be no funeral. A memorial will be held to celebrate his life, March 27, 2010, at the family home in Summerland.
