He also had five great-grandchildren.
Arthur was a piano builder during the 1930s and was an accomplished, gifted pianist. He tuned pianos well into his eighties wherever he lived.
During the Second World War, he served in the Postal Corps and continued as a letter-carrier with Canada Post until he retired in 1973.
A much-reminisced accomplishment took place in 1948. He packed up his bicycle, hopped on a train to Quesnel, and spent two weeks pedalling back to New Westminster. He passed through Likely, Forest Grove, Canim, Mahood, and Drewry Lakes, then through 100 Mile. From Clinton, he went through Kelly Lake, Lillooet, and down through the Fraser Canyon. A lot occurred during those two weeks and people enjoyed listening to his stories.
During his retirement years he worked with wood, tended his vegetable and flower gardens, listened to classical music, and did a lot of reading.
He helped raise his family in Surrey, then he and Ellen retired to Chilliwack, then Yarrow, Mill Bay, and 100 Mile House followed.
Arthur requested no funeral, however he asked that if anyone wants to listen to music in his memory, it should be Sir Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variation #9 “The Nimrod.” He thought it would be “quite fitting.”
Arthur was a wonderfully generous husband and father – always smiling, never raising his voice or complaining – a grand gentleman.
We will indeed miss this wonderful musician and gardener. We leave him in God’s loving and compassionate mercy.
Since Arthur was always willing to help others, donations in his memory can be made to: Compassion Works Int’l, 2035 Queen St. Abbotsford, B.C. V2T 6J3. The funds will go to help sick children in Kenya.
The family thanks Dr. Street, the 100 Mile Hospital and Home Care Support staff as well as the ambulance and Watch Lake first-responder crews for all their help over the last few weeks. Billy had a great zest for life and could always make people smile. If you knew him – you know what we mean. Anyone who has ever come in contact with him even for a few moments has never forgotten him or he them - he had a fantastic memory for faces. We, Syd and Angie Greenfield and our family, had the privilege of being Bill’s care family for 29 years. He taught us so much about unconditional love and loving life to the fullest and being enthusiastic about every moment. Bill had Downs Syndrome and he also had an enlarged heart – not just physically - his heart was truly big and loving. How we miss him.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Bill is survived by his sisters: Diane Paisley of Cobble Hill, B.C. and Freida Hutcheon of Saskatchewan and their families, and his best friend Paul Beaven who has been with Bill since they were children in Woodlands, and then residents of the Miller home in Surrey. They were apart for a short while and then both came to live with us in 1981. Our five children were raised with them.
We have never had a dull moment living with Billy, just thinking of him causes us to smile and chuckle, and we now have wonderful memories to cherish.
Bill was always a people person, he loved to ham it up and have fun. He was a devoted fan of the real Batman (played by Adam West), in fact many people and children instantly gave Billy the nickname of Batman. He loved Elvis, Bryan Adams, Johnny Cash, George Strait, marching bands, parades, bagpipes, the circus, parties, dancing, playing the air guitar, Mickey Mouse, Superman, Zorro and the Lone Ranger to name a few of his passions. But most of all Billy loved hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries!!
We are deeply grateful for the wonderful care and compassion Billy received from the doctors, nurses and all the staff at 100 Mile Hospital and for the kindness we were shown too.
We wish also to express our appreciation to everyone at the Cedar Crest Society for welcoming Bill with open arms when we moved here from Langley four years ago. We also would like to thank the Society for their help with the Celebration of Bill’s Life which will take place on Thursday February 4th at 1pm at the Valley Room behind the Red Coach Inn.
100 Mile Funeral Service Ltd. entrusted
with the arrangements. 250-395-3243
Condolences can be sent to the family at www.100milefuneralservice.com

MACDONNELL, Lois Mary Sunday, 17 Jan 2010

100 Mile House Free Press 100 Mile House, BC

 July 14, 1943 – Jan. 17, 2010
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lois Mary MacDonnell on January 17, 2010.
Lois will be dearly missed by her husband of 45 years Pat, son Duane (Deanna), daughter Barbara, four grandchildren: Michael, Andrew (Rebecca), Derek, Heather; and great-grandchild Asher, as well as many wonderful family and friends.
The Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 21, 2010 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church on Horse Lake Road, 100 Mile House.
